A complex painting project with a tight time frame
The initial spec – Amico & Co was faced with a challenge: a double topcoat application paintjob of all of the Michigan Blue parts of this remarkable superyacht – both of the hull and the inside of the superstructures – plus priming with an isolating layer on top of the previous paint system.
The works were completed inside a five-month dry-dock period, a record time period, considering the complexity of the work in hand.
Flexibility during refit -Whilst a part of the paintjob proceeded, several weeks were spent on testing on the substrate to achieve the agreed contractual standard despite the off-range colour, requiring a complex and constantly revised production schedule with localised tenting and spraying, so as to not over-run the necessary refit timeframe.
Engineering – major overhauling of the two main MTU 16V 4000 M70 engines and of the three diesel generators were completed together with SDT, coordinated by the vessel’s technical refit managers Hill Robinson, together with numerous other mechanical works completed in the same refit period.
All of this was made available thanks to the extraordinary 102m internal graving dock inside the shipyard, with its fully retractable cover which can be opened in the middle during works to permit craning works, despite interferences.
AMICO & CO
The key to success was reaching a working technical solution, obviously compatible with the agreed contractual standard, using that specific off-range colour.”
