So Simone, describe your job to us.
A project manager deals with the management of one or more projects to achieve the goal set by the customers. He or she directs the entire project from the outset, taking care of planning, execution, monitoring and completion. All this must be done ensuring that the agreed costs, times and quality of the project are respected. The project manager must be able to make the most out of his resources, negotiate with suppliers, and dialogue with the customer. This includes planning, delegation, monitoring, and control.
A senior project manager must be able to carry out more complex tasks than those routinely required by a project manager; in particular, being able to lead complex projects successfully. This not only from both the technical and timing point of view, but especially maximizing profit margin for the company.
Can you tell us about your studies and the professional experiences that led you to this role?
On the academic side, I hold a Master of Science and Bachelor of Science in naval architecture and marine engineering from the University of Genoa. Professionally, I spent six months as a sales engineer for the Genoa office of Wartsila and eighteen months as an approval marine surveyor for the Rotterdam office of Lloyd’s Register, before spending the last thirteen years in Amico & Co!
Tell us briefly about your typical day.
A typical day as a project manager is ideally divided into three phases.
Firstly, starting all planned activities, ensuring all workers are in position, properly instructed, and properly provided with everything necessary to perform with quality and efficiency. Secondly, checking the progress and development of the above-mentioned activities, managing anything unforeseen and providing efficient solutions. Finally, based on the achievements of the day, prepare the short-term plan for the next days and update the long-term schedule for the project.
In between these three main phases, the project manager must find time to ensure that the economical aspects of the project are always in line with expectations, attend technical and commercial meetings, inspect the quality of the tasks, update project documentation, inspect new works, make quotations, prepare new works when approved by the customer. You must therefore have developed experience on significant jobs in terms of size, understanding the resources involved and the financial and organizational impact. The project manager’s day must also focus on human resource management, as this and communication are fundamental skills.
What do you like most about your job?
After many years I enjoy exactly what concerned me most when I started out: providing efficient and reliable technical solutions, preparing all the tasks and planning meticulously in detail, and meeting the completion date of a project that everybody else thinks is not achievable. But more than everything else, I enjoy the adrenaline that challenging projects provide!

Il project manager si occupa della gestione di uno o più progetti per raggiungere l’obiettivo fissato dai clienti. Dirige l’intero progetto fin dall’inizio, occupandosi della pianificazione, dell’esecuzione, del monitoraggio e del completamento. Tutto questo deve avvenire garantendo il rispetto dei costi, dei tempi e della qualità del progetto.
Il project manager deve essere in grado di sfruttare al meglio le proprie risorse, di negoziare con i fornitori e di dialogare con il cliente. Ciò comprende la pianificazione, la delega, il monitoraggio e il controllo.
IL project manager senior deve essere in grado di svolgere compiti più complessi di quelli normalmente richiesti a un project manager; in particolare, deve essere in grado di guidare con successo progetti complessi. Questo non solo dal punto di vista tecnico e dei tempi, ma soprattutto per massimizzare il margine di profitto dell’azienda.
Ci descrivi il percorso di studi e le esperienze professionali che ti hanno portato a ricoprire questo ruolo?
Dal punto di vista accademico, ho conseguito un Master of Science e un Bachelor of Science in ingegneria navale all’Università di Genova.
Professionalmente, ho trascorso sei mesi come sales engineer per l’ufficio di Genova di Wartsila e diciotto mesi come PLAN approval marine surveyor per l’ufficio di Rotterdam del Lloyd’s Register, prima di trascorrere gli ultimi tredici anni in Amico & Co.
Raccontaci brevemente la tua giornata tipo:
Una giornata tipo di un project manager si divide idealmente in tre fasi. In primo luogo, l’avvio di tutte le attività pianificate, assicurandosi che tutti i lavoratori siano in posizione, adeguatamente istruiti e dotati di tutto il necessario per svolgere con qualità ed efficienza. In secondo luogo, controllare l’andamento e lo sviluppo delle attività sopra citate, gestendo gli imprevisti e fornendo soluzioni efficaci. Infine, sulla base dei risultati ottenuti, preparare il piano a breve termine per i giorni successivi e aggiornare il programma a lungo termine del progetto.
Tra queste tre fasi principali, il project manager deve trovare il tempo per assicurarsi che gli aspetti economici del progetto siano sempre in linea con le aspettative, partecipare a riunioni tecniche e commerciali, controllare la qualità dei compiti, aggiornare la documentazione del progetto, controllare i nuovi lavori, fare preventivi, preparare nuovi lavori quando approvati dal cliente. Deve quindi aver sviluppato un’esperienza significativa su lavori importanti, comprendendo le risorse coinvolte e l’impatto finanziario e organizzativo.
La giornata del project manager deve essere incentrata anche sulla gestione delle risorse umane, poiché questa e la comunicazione sono competenze fondamentali.
Cosa ti piace maggiormente del tuo lavoro?
Dopo molti anni mi piace esattamente ciò che mi preoccupava di più quando ho iniziato: fornire soluzioni tecniche efficienti e affidabili, preparare tutti i compiti e pianificare meticolosamente nei dettagli, e rispettare la data di completamento di un progetto che tutti gli altri pensano non sia realizzabile. Ma più di ogni altra cosa, mi piace l’adrenalina che mi danno i progetti impegnativi!
